What rpm should I shift at?

In most petrol (gas) cars, shift up between 2,000 and 3,000 rpm; in a diesel, between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm. When shifting down, the new gear should leave the revs between 2,000 and 3,500 rpm. Outside that range the car jolts, lugs or burns more fuel.

Practice shifting on the straight

How to shift without a jolt

  1. Accelerate until the needle is near 2,500 rpm.
  2. Lift off the gas and press the clutch all the way, at the same time.
  3. Move to the next gear without forcing it.
  4. Raise the clutch in one smooth motion and get back on the gas.

FAQ

What if there is no rev counter?

Listen: when the engine gets loud and high, shift. If it bogs down, the gear is too high.

When should I downshift?

When the revs drop near 1,500 rpm or when you need pull.

What happens if I rev it out?

It burns more fuel and, at the limit, the engine cuts out near 6,000 rpm.
