How do you find the clutch bite point?

The biting point (or friction point) is the part of the pedal travel where the engine starts pushing the car: the car shakes slightly, the revs drop by 100 to 200 rpm and the bonnet lifts. To find it, stop on the flat, select first and raise the clutch very slowly without gas until you feel it. It sits in the middle of the travel, not at the top.

Practice the bite point

Step by step

  1. Stop on the flat, foot on the brake.
  2. Clutch all the way down, select first gear.
  3. Raise the clutch very slowly, no gas.
  4. When the car shakes and the revs dip, stop there: that is the bite point. Press down and repeat until you find it without thinking.

The bite point is usually near the middle of the pedal travel; in the game it sits between 28% and 63% of the travel. Source: PassMeFast

FAQ

How long should I hold the bite point?

Only until the car starts moving. Holding it too long wears the clutch.

Is it the same in a diesel?

A diesel has more pull at low revs, so it is more forgiving. Same move.

What is feathering the clutch?

Holding the pedal around the bite point. It is how you do a hill start.
